So i’m currently in the Cagayan De Oro, Philippines…

Somewhere I call my second home after spending every other year of my life here for one month!

My mom actually grew up in this area before it was struck with poverty and traffic was less than stuffy. Now, squatters line most of the streets and there are plenty of vendors offering their goods to make a living. Of course, there are always nice parts of town where the more than rich residents reside, many of them involved in local politics or businesses.

My family usually spends around 3 weeks hanging around here in Cagayan De Oro. It’s known for it’s rich fruits and white water rafting…and other things of course. It’s an extremely provincial area where a lot of farmers grow produce and farm animals to sell for food. Healthy animals that is.

The food is SO delicious here. I’ve already had my first lechon {pork on a skewer} for this trip and plenty of fresh mangoes for breakfast. And there is always plenty of sweets to go around. Filipinos love putting sugar in everything, including the main course. But I’m usually persuaded by their wonderful desserts…my personal favorite? Ube {purple yam} anything!

I have to say I was disappointed with 500 Days of Summer

.Joseph Gordon-Levitt (10 things I hate about You) and Zooey Deschanel (Elf, Yes Man) did a fine job of conveying the raw emotions of love in a relationship, the denial, the rejection, the point of falling head over heels for the other person. They told the story about what love is like…maybe about falling in love…mostly boy meets girl, girl meets boy, boy likes girl, girl doesn’t like boy. You feel this pain for Joseph’s character, Tom, who seems to never have it in the bag, and has completely let go of himself for Zooey’s character, Summer, who, in the end, decides that Tom is not the one for her. And perhaps by the end, you can respect her decision, that she was perfectly aware of fate but man, she was brutal. All I wanted to do was sympathize for Tom, but in the end he met his match: Autumn.

It was a catchy ending but I thought that it missed the mark, earning it 2.5 out of 4 stars for me. I was disappointed with the ending, that it ended too easily, or maybe the two characters should have ended up together. But…did I say I was disappointed with the soundtrack? No, it was a brilliant plethora of soft spoken female artists and a few others such as Regina Spektor, The Smiths, Carla Bruni, She & Him (Duh)…etc. I think the soundtrack even outshone the movie itself, earning a number 2 spot next to the Garden State Soundtrack, which is quite unbeatable itself. At whatever rate, maybe it’s just the fact that I would take Joseph Gordon-Levitt any day..ooo lala.

So Kate Moss completely changed the image of the fashion industry…similar to the effects of Twiggy.

Before Twiggy, it was the curvy size 8 models, almost like Marilyn Monroe..the classic era or size 13-26 waist, size 23-32 hips which was then taken down a notch to the stick thin girls.

Along came the 80’s and 90’s where bodacious and voluptuous women ruled the runway like Naomi Campbell, introduced to the fashion industry by Yves Saint Laurent and Cindy Crawford, the face of current fashion back then. Until the one and only party animal Kate Moss came around. she became the face of many brands including Chanel, Burberry, Gucci, YSL, etc. What was primary crazy about Kate Moss was that she was only 5’ 6 1/2…an extraordinarily short measurement for a popular runway model or the ‘it’ girl of the industry. Most models were past her height, and yet Kate had the face and the body to pull of almost any look. She was a chameleon for the commercial, editorial, and runway canvases, which made her appealing to most designers. She had the face and the proportions to bring this new sense of body build into the industry that turned heads from curvaceous to ‘skinny.’

Kate can be given the responsibility of the current look of the fashion industry today- tall and lean is how the designers like them. Most models have become anorexic because of the body type trend… even Kate was quoted herself saying “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,” opening controversy in the industry and anti-anorexia organizations…

But in the end, I have to say, Kate, you do look good and yes, skinny does feel good, but what matters most is how comfortable we feel in our own natural skin. Skinny, in fact, just happens to be hers.

Speaking of which, in the past 2 days, I’ve let it slip my mind that I actually have 40 croquis to get started on and some finishes to do by the end of my break! This is such a great reminder :)
